Immerse yourself in artistic mediums and heighten sensory awareness, to foster a transformative healing journey.
Facilitating and supporting you every step of the way.
Sensorimotor Art therapy involves the use of the hands focusing on haptic perception (the use of the hands and touch as a tool of perception). Touch is one of the most fundamental human experiences and is the basis of secure attachment. Using creative techniques such as guided drawing, clay, collage and paint helps both children and adults to explore their emotions and any issues related to trauma, grief, addiction, anxiety, or major life changes. My ambition is to help you on your journey toward healing and self-discovery, allowing you to better cope with change.
My name is Alyson Byrnes
I am an Art Therapist with a sincere dedication to assist individuals, both young and adult, navigating the complexities of stress or trauma. In the realm of Sensorimotor Art Therapy, it is my mission to foster a secure and nurturing sanctuary, inviting clients to embark on a transformative journey of creative expression and heightened sensory awareness, allowing them to effectively communicate and process their emotional struggles.
My qualifications include a Diploma of Initiatic Sensorimotor Art Therapy and a Diploma in Early Childhood and Community Services, coupled with 18 years of experience in working with children since 2004. Recently, I have adeptly employed Art Therapy techniques with children, young adults, and small groups, and operate from the tranquil confines of my home art studio.
What is Art Therapy?
Art Therapy provides an environment to address implicit traumatic memories that lack a narrative but have greatly influenced our sense of self. Through employing a wide range of artistic mediums, we allow discoveries to unfold rhythmically, repetitively, and through non-verbal means.
Our hands, unlike any other bodily appendage, possess an astonishingly intricate network of sensory organs. With approximately 16,000 touch sensors per square inch of fingertip skin, they establish a profound communication channel with our brains.
Using our hand in sensory contact with clay, finger paints and varied collage materials creates a feedback loop between motor impulses and sensory awareness, which appeals to the sensorimotor needs of our earliest psychological development.
The success of Art Therapy relies on experts’ ability to provide a secure space for explorations, and their expertise in identifying the appropriate material/s that resonate with each client. It is then through nurturing a sense of sensorimotor satisfaction and enhancing the quality of tactile experiences, we can effectively stimulate enduring neurophysiological repair, yielding profound and lasting transformative effects.
